Five arrested in connection with copper cable theft worth US$48,360

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with the theft of copper cables at Ngwarati Mine, Turf, Kadoma.

The incident occurred on April 14th, 2024, around 10:30 am.

According to police reports, Donald Magaya (23), Onismo Magaya (26), Takudzwa Mango (25), Rabson Mandini (23), and Innocent Chafera (38) were arrested following a swift response to received information. 

The suspects were intercepted while traveling in two white Toyota GD6 motor vehicles near Ngezi Services Garage, Turf, Kadoma. Upon sighting the police, an accomplice, Kupakwashe Mutizira, managed to flee the scene.

Indications are that, during a search, police recovered copper cables weighing 2,572 kilograms valued at US$48,360.00. 

The four initial suspects were arrested and interviewed, leading to the implication of Innocent Chafera as their accomplice. 

Chafera was apprehended while hiding in a disused mining shaft.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging the public to provide any information that may aid in the arrest of the outstanding suspect, Kupakwashe Mutizira, who remains at large.

In a separate incident, the police are also seeking information leading to the arrest of Francis Chikopa (45), a foreign national, in connection with a case of copper theft. Chikopa is suspected of offloading 36 tonnes of copper from a white Howo Sinotruk truck, which was in transit from Zambia to Mozambique. The truck was later found abandoned at Macheke Business Centre, Macheke.
