Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of the late President Mugabe, has been issued with a warrant of arrest after failing to attend his court hearing.
Chatunga was scheduled to appear before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday, but did not show up for the court hearing.
According to a report by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mugabe faces two charges: disorderly conduct and possession of prohibited knives.
The incident in question occurred on August 31, 2024, at the Bubi Security Roadblock in Beitbridge. Mugabe’s vehicle, driven by a South African national, was stopped by police officers. When asked to produce his passport and vehicle registration documents, Mugabe handed his passport to the police officer.
The officer then instructed the driver to park the vehicle on the side of the road. Mugabe allegedly became agitated when the officer requested that the vehicle be parked further off the road.
“He reportedly exited the vehicle and approached the officer, shouting, “What are you doing? You are delaying me for the fourth time. I am rushing to a wedding in Harare. Check my passport. Don’t you know who I am? During the altercation, a small brown knife allegedly fell from Mugabe’s black hooded fleece jacket, “reads the NPA’s report.
The police recovered the knife, leading to Mugabe’s arrest,he was later granted bail by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court.
