Harare- The government has confirmed that Zimbabweans living in Iran and Israel are safe, following the 12-day war between the two rival Middle-Eastern countries.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said Zimbabweans in the diaspora are entitled to the several rights and benefits, including the protection granted by the State wherever they may be.
“Zimbabwean citizens who contacted our Embassies in the affected countries are accounted for and confirmed safe,” Ministry spokesperson Philisiwe Chidawanyika said.
Further, Chidawanyika encouraged, Zimbabwean citizens to register their presence in a foreign country with the nearest Embassy of Zimbabwe to facilitate communication and enable the Government to provide the necessary services and support when the need arises.
“The Government of Zimbabwe remains committed to the protection of its citizens living abroad through offering consular services as well as facilitating repatriation and evacuation of citizens in distress situations,” said Chidawanyika.
Over the last two weeks Israel and Iran have been trading missiles, leaving a trail of distraction and death in both countries.
On the 13th of June, Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear facilities and Revolutionary Guard Infrastructure, claiming this was to stop Iran from reaching a nuclear weapons “breakout” point.
Iran retaliated by launching drone and missile attacks on Israeli and United States(U.S) interests in the region.
International mediators, including the United Nations and countries like Qatar and Oman, helped broker a truce. Both sides have agreed to a ceasefire. While the truce brings temporary calm, tensions remain high over Iran’s nuclear program and future regional security.
