ZRP cracks down on motor-vehicle crimes

The Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) has arrested 12 individuals linked to a spate of motor vehicle and robbery cases in Harare and surrounding areas in the crackdown of motor-vehicle related crimes.

In a statement, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi sates that the arrests we made between the 10th and 24th of June.

According to a statement issued by ZRP, the suspects are believed to be involved in at least nine reported cases. The arrested individuals include Edwin Kudyarawanza (24), Ackenarton Mvere (32), Solomon Nyashanu (48), Farai Sandura (37), Simbarashe Kariwo (38), Billy Willard Maseve (40), Tinashe Ndaonesa (35), Richard Muchena (44), Wiseman July (43), Macdonald Bopoto (37), Zenzo Churu (39), and Bride Mudyanadzo (34)

In one case on the 30th of May, Kudayeawanza stole and Isuzu Rodeo and $40 during a drinking binge at Monley Shoulder Night Club in Seke. In another case, Mvere and Nyashanu were arrested first stealing a 30-ton trailer at a car in Tynwald.

Meanwhile, Sandura, Kariwo, Maseve and Ndaonesa were nabbed for stealing a Nissan Sulphy, after being offered a lift from Harare Central Business District(CBD) to Chitungwiza.

In another instance Muchenga and July were arrested on three counts of robbery of motor vehicles in Kuwadzana, Harare CBD and Chitungwiza. The trio targeted pirate taxis(mushika-shika) and merrymakers at beer drinking spots.

ZRP says most of the suspects have appeared before courts.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against crime in the country. Motorists are urged to properly secure their vehicles at car parks whether at home, Central Business District or night clubs, shopping centers and other relevant places,” reads the statement.

Drivers were also warned against giving strangers lifts, a tactic frequently exploited in such crimes.
