Malawians are casting their votes today in a closely watched general election that will decide the presidency, parliament, and local government leadership.

Seventeen candidates are vying for the presidency, but the contest is largely expected to be a showdown between incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera and former leader Peter Mutharika. Also in the race is ex-president Joyce Banda, among others.

The election comes at a time when Malawi is grappling with deep economic challenges. Inflation has remained above 20 percent for years, fuel and food shortages persist, and many families are struggling with the rising cost of living. Climate shocks, including droughts and the devastating impact of Cyclone Freddy, have further strained the country’s fragile economy.

Polls opened at 6 AM local time across the country, with thousands of Malawians queuing early to cast their ballots. Under new electoral rules, a winning candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.

Despite visible voter enthusiasm in some areas, observers have reported growing frustration and disillusionment among citizens who feel promises of development and reform remain unfulfilled.

International and domestic observers are monitoring the vote closely for fairness and transparency, mindful of Malawi’s history of disputed elections. In 2019, the Constitutional Court annulled results citing widespread irregularities, a landmark ruling in African electoral jurisprudence.

Results from today’s polls are expected within the coming days, with the outcome likely to shape Malawi’s political and economic direction for years to come.
