Two senior employees at the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) in Hwange have appeared in court facing charges of stealing company property valued at nearly US$3.9 million.

The accused, Tawanda Mhaka, a Stores Officer, and Ruth Chiyani, a Loss Control Assistant, are alleged to have conspired with an accomplice, Hardlife Zimwenje, who is still at large.

Investigations revealed that on August 22 and 23 this year, CCTV cameras captured a truck at ZPC’s Turbine Hall being loaded with stolen goods, including 15 electric motors, 48 tonnes of brass pipes, and a metal container. The footage reportedly showed the items being loaded without proper documentation.

Statement by the NPA

Chiyani is accused of overseeing the illegal loading of the goods but failing to provide invoices to justify their movement, while Mhaka allegedly instructed a boilermaker to cut an electric motor and a storage container to make them easier to load.

The stolen property was reportedly transported using haulage trucks hired by Zimwenje. Both Mhaka and Chiyani were arrested on September 11, with investigators citing overwhelming evidence against them, including CCTV footage and removal authority documents signed by the pair.

The duo has been remanded in custody until September 26.

The National Prosecuting Authority said the case highlights the need for accountability in safeguarding national assets, adding that acts of economic sabotage would be thoroughly investigated and punished.
