East London, South Africa – October 1, 2025 – Julius Malema, of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has been found guilty on multiple firearm-related charges stemming from a 2018 rally in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. The East London Magistrate’s Court handed down the verdict on Wednesday, convicting Malema for unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public space.
Malema was found guilty on five counts:
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
- Unlawful possession of ammunition
- Discharging a firearm in a public place
- Reckless endangerment of persons or property
- Failing to take reasonable precautions to avoid danger
Meanwhile, Malema’s former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted on two charges related to the incident.
The charges stem from a 2018 incident during the EFF’s fifth-anniversary rally in Mdantsane. A video of Malema firing a rifle at the event went viral, prompting the lobby group AfriForum to initiate legal proceedings. Malema previously maintained that the firearm in question was a toy.
Magistrate Twanet Olivier announced that sentencing will begin on January 23, 2026. Legal experts anticipate significant media attention ahead of the sentencing, given Malema’s high-profile status and the public interest in the case.
The verdict has already sparked debate across social media platforms, with supporters expressing outrage and critics welcoming the ruling as a step toward accountability for public figures.
