More than 40 people have died and several others were seriously injured after a Zimbabwean-bound bus overturned on the N1 highway outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, South Africa.

The crash occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, roll down an embankment, and land on its roof. The bus, which had departed from Gqeberha, was carrying Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals.

According to South African authorities, the confirmed death toll stands at 42. Among the deceased are 18 adult females, 17 adult males, and 7 minors. Over 30 passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.

Emergency services are still at the scene, with rescue teams working to recover passengers who are believed to be trapped inside the wreckage.

South African officials, together with regional embassies, are in the process of identifying the victims and coordinating support for the survivors.
