A traditional beer ceremony in Mashava ended in tragedy after two children died and 14 people — including seven adults and four children were hospitalised with suspected food poisoning, police have confirmed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the victims fell ill after eating sadza and drinking mahewu during a ritual gathering on 27 October 2025. The affected families reportedly developed sudden and severe stomach pains shortly after the meal.
Two minors aged three and seven died, while four children and seven adults are battling for their lives at Masvingo General Hospital. Three other victims are being treated at Mashava Clinic.
Police have launched investigations to determine the cause of the poisoning and whether foul play is involved.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said more information will be released as inquiries continue.
Authorities have urged communities to be cautious when preparing and consuming food during large gatherings, particularly traditional ceremonies, where food safety measures may not always be monitored.
