The Director-General of the country’s telecommunications regulator, ‘Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe’ (POTRAZ), Dr. Gift Machengete, revealed that Starlink has applied for a license to offer its services in Zimbabwe.
This announcement was made by Dr. Machengete during a question-and-answer session at the 2024 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
Starlink had not applied to operate in Zimbabwe, and now POTRAZ is in the process of looking at their applications.
“They have come to apply, and we are in the process of looking at their application,” said Dr Machengete.
“We have not banned them, what we have just done is that those who have been using Starlink terminals were asked to have Starlink switched off because we cannot allow illegality,” said Dr. Machengete.
POTRAZ has since sever illegal Starlink users in the country.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation founded by Elon Musk that provides global internet services in areas underserved by traditional internet superstructures.
Mozambique, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and other African countries have since licensed Starlink.
