Bindura University student set to represent Zim at FISU Games in Nigeria

BINDURA University of Science Education’s National Sports Academy star Wayne Nkomo has qualified for the Federation of African University sports (FISU) to be held in Nigeria next month.

Nkomo, who was named the best female athlete at the CUCSA games that were held in South Africa last month, will be one of the representatives at this years tournament, which is expected to start from September 20- 29 in Lagos.

This tournament will have university and college student-athletes from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, eSwatini, South Africa, Malawi, and the hosts Nigeria.

Nkomo’s story is one of too many African girls with nothing on their names but a dream. Not born in royalty but taught that they can work hard to earn the title of royalty.

“I won Presidential awards last year, and I’m the best female athlete and overall best sports person of the year as of 2024 at Bindura University.

“Recently, l was in Bulawayo for Zimbabwe Nationals, l got three gold medals in Javelin, discus, and shotput. I also qualified for the championship, which will be held in Cameroon,” she said.

Nkomo went on to express how excited he was when she was selected to represent Zimbabwe at the upcoming competition in Nigeria.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my country on an international level, l am also looking forward to immersing myself in the culture and traditions of Nigeria, and meeting new people from different backgrounds and countries,” she said.

“I am looking forward to the trip to the East, and l have been training hard, and l can’t wait to showcase my skills and compete against the best athletes in the world,” she said.

Despite knowing the mammoth task ahead of her, Nkomo has promised a podium finish.”Overall, l am filled with anticipation and determination to make the most out of this trip and bring home some medals for my team and country,” Nkomo said.

Facing tough competition from all over the world, Nkomo says she will be putting all her energy on the tournament so as to protect her legacy.

Nkomo was also part of the netball team that won silver at the CUCSA games.The multi talented athlete aims at raising The country’s flag high.
