The police has rolled out a series of heightened security and road safety measures to ensure a crime-free and accident-free celebration as the nation marks the 45th Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.

In a statement issued by police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) said it has deployed adequate manpower nationwide to enforce traffic regulations and deter criminal activity. Special crack teams are on high alert to swiftly respond to armed robbery reports.

“Decisive action will be taken against motorists who flout road rules,” reads part of the statement. Unroadworthy vehicles, pirate taxis (mushikashika), unregistered or plateless cars, and buses without permits will be impounded. Drunk drivers will be arrested on the spot.

The police also warned public transport operators against overloading and employing touts who harass passengers, some of whom are reportedly engaging in criminal activities. Drivers are encouraged to cooperate with officers at checkpoints and patrols to enhance road safety.

In residential and business areas, police commanders have been instructed to intensify patrols and arrest drug dealers and other criminal elements. The public is urged not to carry large sums of money or disclose financial information, as part of broader efforts to reduce robbery cases.

The ZRP further vowed to take stern action against unlicensed liquor outlets and encouraged citizens to report licensed outlets that violate trading times.

As schools close for the holiday, parents were also urged to monitor their children to prevent cases of drug abuse, rape, and unsafe night travel.

Members of the public are encouraged to report criminal activity via the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes the nation a crime and accident-free Heroes and Defence Forces Holiday,” the statement concluded.
