When sungura legend Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo passed away in 2011, there were widespread reports that despite his two-decade-long career and 14 albums, he had died without owning a house.

Now, more than a decade later, his son and heir to the Utakataka Express, Peter Moyo, has set the record straight.

Speaking to DJ Ollah 7 on the ‘On the Spot’ podcast, Peter revealed that Tongai Moyo had in fact sold his house in order to fund his cancer treatment.

“My father did have a house. What happened is that we, as his children, moved out of that house into another one without even knowing it had been sold — we just thought we were relocating. He had actually sold his house in order to pay the bills for his cancer treatment,” expressed Peter.

“At the time of his death, he was building another house in Kwekwe and it was actually at window level,” Peter explained. He added that after his father’s passing, he took it upon himself to complete the construction of the family home.

Peter also reflected on how his father’s last words shaped his path in life. “Just before he died, my father told me that if he dies, the band should not die. That is the reason I left my passion for soccer and decided to continue with Utakataka Express,” he said.

Now established in his own right, Peter is preparing to release a new album later this month. He revealed that the project, titled Muchinda Muhombe, will be launched on 29 August at the Steakhouse in Waterfalls.

“The album is a symbol of how I have become great at music and the business at my level,” Peter said, describing it as both a tribute to his journey and his father’s enduring legacy.

The album launch is expected to draw both loyal Utakataka fans and a new generation of sungura followers, continuing the flame lit by Tongai Moyo more than 20 years ago.
