The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced a one-month national firearm amnesty, allowing citizens to voluntarily surrender unlicensed or illegally acquired firearms and ammunition without facing prosecution.
The amnesty, granted by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in line with the SADC Protocol on Firearms Control, will run from 24 September to 24 October 2025. During this period, members of the public are urged to hand over firearms at their nearest police stations, where they will receive an official safe custody receipt.
Police say the move comes amid growing concerns over firearm misuse linked to unlicensed possession. Investigations revealed that some individuals continue to hold on to weapons despite changes in circumstances — including company closures, inactive gun clubs, or the inheritance of firearms from licensed holders. Authorities warn that such practices have fueled violent crimes such as armed robbery and murder.
ZRP has also expressed concern that some licensed firearm holders are failing to renew certificates or properly secure their guns, leaving room for theft and misuse. Unclaimed firearms surrendered by gun dealers and clubs have further highlighted gaps in compliance with the Firearms Act, Chapter 10:09.
ZRP Commissioner for Press and Public Relations, Commissioner Nyathi, urged all citizens to take advantage of the amnesty window:
“We are calling on Zimbabweans to regularise firearm possession and ownership. After the deadline, police will conduct checks and verifications on individuals suspected of keeping illegal firearms.”
The police reminded all licensed firearm holders to update their records at local stations to ensure compliance with the law.
