Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the September 16, 2025, presidential election, ahead of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s final results announcement. In a national address on Wednesday, Chakwera stated,
“It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution.”
He also expressed his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power. Chakwera personally called Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to congratulate him on his victory and wish him well as he prepares to return to office.
Preliminary results indicate that Mutharika, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), secured over 66% of the vote, surpassing the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff. Chakwera, of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), trailed with approximately 24% of the vote.
This marks the fourth electoral contest between the two rivals. Mutharika previously served as president from 2014 to 2020. His 2019 victory was annulled due to electoral irregularities, leading to a rerun that Chakwera won in 2020.
Chakwera’s concession comes amid significant economic challenges, including high inflation, food shortages, and widespread poverty, which have contributed to public dissatisfaction and may have influenced the election’s outcome.
The Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to release the official results later today.
