The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has officially parted ways with Michael Nees, the Warriors’ head coach, following a string of poor results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the team’s underwhelming preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nees, a German national, was appointed in mid-2024 with the mandate to rebuild the national team and restore Zimbabwe’s competitive edge after years of instability within the Warriors’ technical department. However, his tenure quickly came under scrutiny as the team struggled to find consistency, winning only two of more than twelve matches under his leadership.

A series of disappointing results — including defeats to regional rivals and lower-ranked nations such as Lesotho — intensified pressure on the coach. Both fans and football analysts widely called for change, citing tactical shortcomings and lack of progress in player development.

ZIFA’s Executive Committee met earlier this week and resolved to terminate Nees’s contract with immediate effect. In a statement released on Wednesday, the association confirmed the decision, thanking Nees for his service but emphasizing the need for a new direction.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect,” statement.

The association noted that preparations for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers remain a priority and hinted at appointing an interim coach — likely from the local football ranks — to guide the Warriors while a permanent replacement is sought.

With Nees’ departure, attention now turns to ZIFA’s next move and the urgent task of reviving the Warriors’ form ahead of crucial international fixtures. Fans are hopeful that a new technical setup can restore confidence and help Zimbabwe reclaim its place among Africa’s competitive football nations.
